Carbery graduate stories

R&D

At Carbery, you need to hit the ground running. It’s a great way to develop new skills, whether that be teamwork, collaboration or communication. There is always the opportunity to learn something new – every day is completely varied and different. I am in daily contact with people from all areas of the business – production, quality, commercial and Research & Development – and the level of responsibility and trust that has been placed on me is great.

I’ve been given the opportunity to attend overseas trade shows and meet customers on technical visits. This month I will head over to Chicago to join our Optipep Sales team on a technical visit.

Carbery is a very customer-focused business; always willing to try new technologies and processes in order to meet the needs of our customers.
You get the opportunity to learn from some of the best people in the industry.

Production

Every day is different – new challenges to face, new problems to solve. All departments are inter-linked so I get exposure to other areas (for example marketing, sales) that you might not get on other graduate programmes. Carbery have a range of different products and we’re not afraid to go out on our own and find opportunities – there’s a bravery there to back ourselves and go at it. We’re competitive. We have the biggest cheese plant in Ireland, and produce great quality products. I think it’s pretty respectable!

I believe that, to be successful at Carbery, you need to be self-motivated. There is an expectation that, if you undertake a project and you need help, you ask for help; but there is also an expectation that you drive it yourself and you get it done.

Quality Assurance

I love working at Carbery. You get great opportunities and are constantly being trained in new areas with additional responsibilities.

You’re trusted to make it work and gain experience. Taking ownership for your work is an important key to success. I completed my work placement at Carbery and later returned to Quality Assurance where I have gained experience in all aspects of the microbiology and chemistry labs. People at Carbery have a strong work ethic and are also genuine and friendly. I’m proud to work at Carbery.

Business Excellence

It’s an exciting time at Carbery, our business is growing and our global teams are growing. We are an international company, proud of our heritage, based in West Cork with 1,300 milk suppliers. We’re locally focused with an international business and international brands.

I completed my 3rd-year work placement at Carbery and then re-joined as a graduate Cheese Production Manager where I learned the trade. I then got the opportunity to spend 6 months at our Synergy Flavors business in the UK as a Production Manager which gave me a sense of the international part of our business. Returning to Cork, I was promoted to my current Business Excellence role; a role which has a big impact on our business.

Carbery is a hard-working, driven business. My advice to new graduates is to “ask questions”; my colleagues at Carbery love sharing what they know so they love being asked questions. It’s a great place to learn.
