Milk Quality and Sustainability Award Winners, The Forde Family, host annual farm walk in Ballinadee

This year’s walk organised in partnership with Teagasc Cork West and Bandon Co-op and took place in recognition of the Forde family’s achievement of winning the 2024 Carbery Milk Quality and Sustainability award.
The walk attracted over 400 attendees, and was attended by Carbery suppliers, farmers, industry stakeholders and representatives from across the West Cork farming community and beyond. During the walk, attendees heard from the Forde’s, Teagasc advisors and Carbery technical experts on farming best practices, covering topics like breeding, sustainability and milk quality. Attendees were given a willow bed demonstration, highlighting effective water management on farms and the importance of water quality in sustainable dairy production. Also among the guests were Minister of Agriculture, fisheries and the Marine, Martin Heydon and the Minister for Biodiversity, Christopher O’Sullivan.

The Forde family farm has been in existence since 1982 and has grown to a 250-cow herd spanning 101 hectares. They became the 20th family to win Carbery’s Milk Quality and Sustainability award in 2024, recognised for their milk quality, herd management and their use of sustainable practices. Their management system includes a strong emphasis on grass utilisation, genetic improvement and a comprehensive animal health and hygiene routine.
Jason Hawkins, CEO of Carbery Group said: “We would like to thank the Forde family for hosting this year’s farm walk. Events like these are not only crucial for sharing knowledge and information, but to showcase the quality, family focus and intergenerational pride that’s at the heart of our milk supply at Carbery.”
“Glenn and his family are a great example of what can be achieved when high standards, careful planning, and a long-term approach to sustainability are applied on farms and the walk was an opportunity for everyone to take something new back to our farms to secure a lasting future for farming across West Cork”.
Eilis Mahon, CEO of Bandon Co-op, added: “Recognising and showcasing profitable and sustainable agricultural practices has never been more important for our industry. As we face serious challenges and opportunities now and into the future, walking the Forde’s was a reminder of what is possible when there is an unwavering commitment to maximising the potential of your herd. They are a fine example for the next generation to take insights from”.
The farm walk coincides with Carbery’s ‘The Real Deal’ campaign, which launched in July. The campaign champions the vital role West Cork dairy farmers play in their communities and in safeguarding the environment. The initiative celebrates farmers as skilled food producers and land stewards who deliver high-quality, sustainable food for Irish families.
